GYEONJU

OVERVIEW

Gyeongju, Treasure Trove of World Heritages

Gyeongju, a city nestled in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, was once the royal capital of the ancient Korean kingdom of Silla (57 BCE – 935 CE). Thanks to its long and splendid history, Gyeongju in Gyeongsangbuk-do has a large number of cultural heritages. Above all else, Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto are the most renowned cultural heritages in Gyeongju, and are regarded as the greatest masterpieces of Korean Buddhist art. They were the first Korean cultural heritages to be registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. In 2000, five districts in Gyeongju were collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name of the Gyeongju Historic Areas, attesting to the outstanding universal value of Gyeongju as a repository of cultural heritages. Historic relics and vestiges of the Silla Kingdom are scattered around the entire city, making Gyeongju the best place to take a closer look at the ancient culture of Korea
