DAEGU

OVERVIEW

Daegu, City of Green Energy

Located in a basin surrounded by mountains in the southeastern area of the Korean Peninsula, Daegu is very famous for its hot summer weather. In order to compensate for the torrid climate, the city government planted a lot of trees alongside the roads, restored local rivers, and built parks and fountains all around the downtown area, creating a more pleasant and environmentally-friendly atmosphere in the city. Also, there are many old alleys and cultural heritages remaining between the well-managed urban parks and modern buildings, so visitors will find plenty of areas of interest during their strolls around the city. In particular, the Modern Alley Tour course includes the first two-story Western-style house built in Daegu, the former residences of wealthy persons, and the birthplace of Samsung Group. Daegu is also renowned for its textile and fashion industry, medical tourism, and traditional oriental medicine. The city has played a leading role in the Korean textile industry since the 1960s, while the medicinal herb market, Yangnyeongsi, has more than 350 years of history and still opens on a regular basis today.
