SSAT

SSAT is one of the primary requirements for admission to the top boarding schools inthe United States, or the Shanghai American School in Shanghai, China.

Our SSAT course provides a comprehensive approach to mastering the four major test sections.

Verbal
The verbal section of the test consists of synonyms and analogies, and is thus focused on vocabulary and logical reasoning. We draw on a proprietary list of SSAT-specific vocabulary words that we have developed through time and experience. Students are systematically introduced to and tested on vocabulary and word roots. For the analogy section, students are trained to identify the major relationship types so they understand exactly how to approach each question.
Reading Comprehension
The reading comprehension section of the SSAT tests students’ ability to read quickly through a passage, understand its content and structure, and respond to focused questions. We have a two-part approach to preparing students for the reading comprehension section. First, students are trained in proper SSAT reading techniques, which allow students to read faster and understand better. Second, students are coached in how to identify different question types and how to systematically retrieve the needed information from the passage.
Math
The math section of the SSAT tests basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry and word problem solving skills. Using our proprietary math technique book, we train our students in the foundational math concepts needed to excel on the math section. We also provide extensive practice drills and feedback which allow the student to understand his or her mistakes and how to correct them.
Written Essay
While the written essay does not directly affect a student’s SSAT score, a copy of it is sent to the schools that receive the score report. It is therefore a crucial aspect of a student’s application, as it provides an understanding of the student’s ability to generate ideas and express him or herself clearly in written English. We train students in all aspects of the standardized test writing process, from understanding the question and brainstorming, to organization and specific writing mechanics. Students will learn how to respond effectively to any SSAT writing prompt, and will gain a foundational understanding of good writing techniques.

LEADERSHIP & LITERATURE

We are not just committed to helping children become better students we are committed to helping them become better, more successful people.

Our Program Is Different

The New Pathway Leadership and Literature program believes that great works of world literature are powerful tools for helping children realize their full potential as students, as future professionals and as human beings.

Our teachers have graduated from the best universities in America (see teacher profiles). Moreover, our teachers are passionate about education and care about students. Whether a student is struggling academically or first in their class, we will work hard to meet an individual student’s learning needs.

Through the writings of great leaders, writers and thinkers, the Leadership and Literature program encourages a child’s total development. Our approach draws upon the most advanced teaching methods from the Stanford University School of Education and Harvard University. It has been carefully designed to empower children to rapidly improve their written and spoken English, cultivate critical thinking and reading skills, and develop leadership abilities.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS

A solid foundation in English Language Arts can unlock the potential to excel in higher level AP/IB courses and admission tests for boarding schools and universities.

Grammar, Writing & Vocabulary

In order to achieve higher levels of reading and writing, students must understand the rules of the English language, retain extensive vocabulary and develop style in their writing. A strong grasp of English grammar provides students with the tools necessary to transform their ideas into easily understandable prose, which is a necessary skill in both their school English classes as well as on the SAT.

Our class emphasizes a broad based approach to grammar that allows students to build upon basic concepts while continuously introducing more advanced principles. In addition to the analysis of grammar fundamentals, students will be constantly pushed to integrate new grammatical concepts into their own writing. This will help the student improve individual sentence structure as well as his/her overall writing technique.

Additionally, having a strong foundation of words not only allows students to be more effective communicators, but also supports high levels of comprehension with regard to any written material, from novels to textbooks. These skills are critical for students to differentiate themselves at school and will give them a critical advantage on standardized tests such as the SAT and TOEFL.

Our course focuses on improving students’ vocabulary through various dimensions of word usage. Most importantly, students will integrate new words into their vocabularies through writing. This is the most effective method for vocabulary development, as it goes beyond memorized definitions and allows students to create associations that will stick with them throughout their academic careers.

Middle School Math
Our middle school math courses cover the 6-8 grade math contents, such as arithmetic, basic algebra, geometry and measurement, functions and graphs, data analysis and probabilities, etc. Our goal is to inspire students to adopt a genuine interest in math and science. We focus on improving students’ problem solving skills as well as helping them to be aware of the application of math in real world.
High School Math
The high school math programs include Algebra (I and II), Geometry and Pre-Calculus. We help the students to have both qualitative understanding of the concepts and quantitative techniques to solve math questions. We emphasize both the problem solving skills and the connections between various math/science concepts so that the students can have a solid foundation for their advanced math/science classes in AP or IB programs and be well prepared for the standardized tests.

AP

Advanced Placement Courses are
college level equivalent courses
taught at the high school level.

They span a variety of subjects and are one of the best
ways to differentiate yourself from your peers.

What are APs?

theirchoice or exempts them from introductory courses

  • Taking AP course increases eligibility for scholarships
  • 85% of selective colleges and universities report that a student’s AP experience favorably impacts admissions decisions
